Topic: What it Takes to Keep Jewish Life Safe in Utah

Bio: David McKean joined the United Jewish Federation of Utah in October 2023 - just one day before October 7 - as our communitys first Jewish Community Security Director, in partnership with the Secure Community Network (SCN). Since then, he has played a critical role in strengthening the safety and preparedness of Jewish life across Utah during an unprecedented period of heightened concern.

Working on behalf of the Federation, Dave leads a comprehensive, community-wide security program supporting our Jewish institutions throughout the entire state. His work includes security assessments, training and drills, threat mitigation, and close coordination with local, state, and federal law enforcement. Recognizing that community security is strengthened through collaboration, Dave also works closely with leaders from other faith communities. offering training and assessments that help build safer, more resilient communities for all.

Before coming to Utah, Dave served 24 years with the FBI, most recently as a Supervisory Special Agent at FBI Headquarters within the Critical Incident Response Group and Counter-IED Unit. He previously held leadership roles in FBI SWAT and bomb technician units, and prior to the FBI served 14 years in the U.S. Army in special operations and as an attack helicopter pilot. David holds a bachelors degree in economics from the University of Utah.
